Course Description
There exists a huge body of information on Chinese herbs that is overlooked in the current TCM curriculum. Since the 1960s, researchers in China and Japan have actively been investigating the pharmacological properties of Chinese herbs. These herb properties directly address tissue pathology such as inflammation, allergy and infection – the basic pathologies of Western disorders of all kinds. This valuable new information is highly relevant for treating today’s metabolic, neurological and endocrine disorders effectively.
As practitioners of Chinese Medicine, we now have the unique opportunity to tap into this overlooked resource for the benefits of our patients. In China, doctors of both Western and Chinese Medicine routinely make use of these modern herb findings when creating formulas for their patients. We too have the opportunity to integrate these into our practice.
This course will present the research-based and clinically validated modern functions of important Chinese herbs. We will discuss their expanded clinical applications in full detail, and present examples of formula building from scratch, as well as modifying important traditional formulas so as to include Western pharmacological herb actions.
Suggested reading: Jade Remedies (Holmes)
In this unique seminar we will explore:
• The enhanced pharmacological actions and Western indications of over 40 commonly used Chinese herbs
• Why including the pharmacological functions of Chinese herbs is crucial for our ability to treat modern chronic disorders successfully
• The top herbs for quenching inflammation and allergy, such as Bupleurum Chai hu, Scutellaria Huang qin and Ganoderma Ling zhi – and the phytochemistry explanation for their effectiveness
• Why using herbs that regulate and tonify nervous and endocrine functions is crucial for managing chronic disorders of most kinds, including Schisandra Wu wei zi, Ligustrum Nu zhen zi, Polygonum He shou wu and Eleuthero Ci wu jia
• Formula building using a traditional formula as a base, and how to modify it to include important pharmacological actions that treat the Western pathology
• Building a herb formula from scratch to address both the pattern presentation and the Western pathology
• The key differences between prescribing for acute versus for chronic conditions
• Important differences to consider among the use of herb granule, tincture and water extracts
What Past Students Have Said …
“This was a much needed class which taught the Western indications of TCM herbs. It’s time that everyone has all the functions of herbs and that TCM practitioners can explain to other clinicians the Western indication of the herbs, which will elevate the profession.” Anon
“I’m very impressed with Peter’s incredible knowledge, experience and depth of understanding – thank you for all the research and insights, and the easy-to-follow organization of the seminar notebook.”
– Amielle Moyer LAc
“Holmes has a high level of knowledge of the subject matter. I really like the way he explains herbal medicine in practical and relatable talking points! He is good about answering questions from students and accepting others’ ideas on the herbs.” Anon.
“Peter has incredible knowledge and wonder for herbs and essential oils – would like more on that for sure, and the interface between his Tense and Nervous System relationship to TCM. Very much appreciated.” Anon.
“Dr. Holmes offers a wealth of information and clinical expertise through an integrative blend of classical Chinese Medicine and functional medicine. We are lucky to have him raise the bar of our medicine, and our patients in turn are lucky to benefit.”
– Elizabeth Fine LAc
